‘Filtered Realities’ is a video installation that critically scrutinises the role of digital face filters and their implicit representation of gender roles in our patriarchal society. By combining visual elements and theoretical reflections, the work explores the ambivalent relationship between virtual aesthetics, gender stereotypes and social power structures.
The work invites the audience to reflect on the complex questions that arise from this digital ‘beauty culture’: Are face filters tools of self-empowerment or symbols of oppression that only feign freedom of choice? How do they influence our understanding of identity, authenticity and perfection in an increasingly virtual world? And what stories do these filters tell about the social structures and power relations that shape our understanding of beauty?
